William Penn Charter School
Frameworks For The Future Campaign Sweep Piece
I created the sweep piece for Penn Charter as the final mailing in their successful $40 million capital campaign. The piece explains what money raised in the capital campaign has already done and will do for the school on one side and is a school pennant on the other. A sweep piece like this is an eye-catching way to wrap up the campaign and “sweep” up any last minute donors. To download a PDF of this design sample, click here.

Report of Gifts
Penn Charter saw great success when they moved their report of gifts from their magazine into a stand-alone piece several years ago, and they continue to receive positive feedback. The latest report marks the end of their $40 million plus Frameworks for the Future capital campaign, and Penn Charter used this opportunity to include a campaign wrap up. In addition to the traditional listing of gifts, the publication contains information on the implications of the campaign on the school’s future, stories on why donors gave, campaign project updates and more. The piece is another reminder of how an inspiring and motivating campaign tied to the brand message of a school will benefit the school long after the campaign is complete. Penn Charter Alumni Magazine
This coed, K-12 Quaker day school in Philadelphia took the suggestion and followed the college model in the redesign of their 2-color magazine into a full 4-color one using double page spread features as well as varied and interesting departments. The magazine was repositioned for all-school readership appeal rather than an alumni-only audience and soon became an award winner. The community response was overwhelming. Upon receiving the first issue, an alumnus from Sweden was prompted to write a congratulatory note to the head of school and express his wishes to return for reunion. Penn Charter has seen continued success with the 4-color magazine in subsequent issues. The type treatment for the banner of the magazine drove the design for the logo that was used for the viewbook, the capital campaign and subsequent school-wide branding. Community Service Brochure
Most independent schools have growing community service programs, and marketing these programs to school constituents can only aid in the growth. Penn Charter also shares their brochure with their non-profit partners and various foundations. The brochure show cases how community service and service learning fit with the mission of the school, and how the program unfolds throughout students’ years at school. It’s filled with pictures of students working both on and off campus helping community members. Current student and faculty testimonials expound upon the significance of the program. A quote on the back cover from William Penn, the school’s founder, serves as a powerful reminder of why community service and service learning are so important at Penn Charter. Summer Camp Brochure
For many schools, the summer camp program is a family’s first introduction to the school and an excellent opportunity to reach prospective students. A bright, engaging design and lively photos of children of all ages convey the spirit of fun and friendship evident in all four of the school camps: day, sports, enrichment and varsity. A color and icon system makes it easy for readers to identify each camp and the applications are bound into the back of the brochure for the family’s convenience and ease of use. Gulf Stream School
Strategic Plan
Gulf Stream School, a PS-8 coed, day school in Gulf Stream, FL worked very hard over a number of years to put together a strong strategic plan. I needed to design it in a manner befitting the importance of such a document. The resulting strategic plan brochure clearly lays out the school’s mission statement, vision and walks the reader through the implementation steps. All the while, highlighting how the plan will benefit the school’s identity and culture, programs, faculty, finance, advancement and facilities. Individuals are recognized in the program through listings of Gulf Stream’s board of trustees, strategic planning steering committee and workshop participants. Photographs of students serve as reminders of why the plan is so critical: The students of Gulf Stream School. To download a PDF of this design sample, click here.

Saint Basil Academy
Viewbook
Saint Basil Academy (SBA) is a 9-12, girls’ day school in Jenkintown, PA. The new viewbook was designed to capitalize on SBA’s current admissions success and improve upon it by increasing interest among prospective families (even as changing demographics result in smaller numbers of high school-age students), demonstrating the advantage of an SBA education and showing what makes it distinct from its chief competition. By positioning SBA as a warm and welcoming place through design, photography and copy, it succeeded in conveying one of the school’s greatest strengths and helped to bring more right-fit families to their door. Solebury School
Enrollment Package
Solebury School, a 7-12, coed day and boarding school in New Hope, PA was in need of a strategic viewbook package that would convey Solebury’s unique identity and distinguish it from its competition. The school needed one package targeted to students and one to parents following research that revealed that students have the final say in school selection. The student viewbook took on the format of a map. Its tone and look are informal, direct and fun. Titled The Road to Solebury School: A Student Guide, the map is made up of an oversized single sheet printed in sections and folded without the need for any binding system. This was a large cost-savings for the school. Included in the overall package is a parent handbook, curriculum guide, application and ESL brochure. All of the pieces fit neatly into a unique jacket folder with scalloped edges. Solebury’s director of advancement reports, “We have been getting nothing but rave reviews. The students are pouring over the ‘map’ and the parents are thoroughly reading the parent guide.” To download a PDF of this design sample, click here. Viewbook As you can imagine, a map-like, fold-out, 36-panel viewbook is an enormous task, so the team divided up the content into panels. Each panel is approximately 7x9 inches. Here are the panels that I was responsible for designing. Click on an image for a close-up view. To download a PDF of this sample assortment, click here. |
Parent Guide
The Solebury School Parent Guide contains general information on curriculum, faculty and fees and reinforces the messages expressed in the student viewbook in a way that speaks to and reassures parents. It contains more copy than the student viewbook and is not as direct and colloquial in tone. The parent guide focuses even more attention on outcomes including profiles of recent grads that are attending selective colleges and pursuing interesting careers. Oldfields School
Enrollment Package
The goal was to define the brand and create an integrated marketing campaign for Oldfields School, an 8-PG girls, day and boarding school in Glencoe, MD. After conducting extensive research throughout the entire school community, I was able to define Oldfield’s distinguishing characteristics, the challenges they face and develop a plan of recommendations that integrate print, advertising, electronic, events, media relations, magazine editorial and new recruitment materials. One of the lasting messages from community focus groups was that the school’s purpose was each girl’s success. This phrase easily adapted into a catchy tagline that was integrated across all marketing materials starting with the admissions package. Focus groups also revealed the fact that prospective students are having more of a say in the choice of which school to attend. The client has seen this trend emerge over the last several years. In order to market effectively to both prospective students and parents, a non-traditional viewbook was created, which took shape in the form of a calendar aimed at the girls and a brochure targeting the parents. The calendar is a spiral bound chronological guide through a year at the school. It asks the question What could your Oldfields Days mean to you? Each month highlights different aspects of the school including Great Minds Don't Have to Think Alike, Teachers who set High Standards without High Pressure, and Specializing in Things Girls Love. The calendar is vibrant and fun, and the school is brought to life through photos of events, student testimonials and what looks like personalized notes scribbled in top of school activities. To download a PDF of the viewbook, click here. Calendar Viewbook As you can imagine, a calendar-inspired viewbook packed with special event reminders is an enormous task. The team divided up the content into calendar spreads, each measuring 8-inches wide by 24-inches in height. I present the pages below that I was responsible for designing.
